King
Continued From Page 1A
Stankiewicz said that
remembering King’s legacy
should not be limited to just
America but should be cele-
brated worldwide.
Hogansville native and
University of Georgia pro-
fessor Dr. Tony Lowe offered
a tribute not only to Dr. King,
but to the six black students
in Hogansville who took the
first steps after desegrega-
tion to attend what had been
a white school.
Lowe named all six of
those students, calling them
foot soldiers in the continu-
ing struggle to end racial bar-
riers. He called upon city
leaders to recognize and
honor those six students. He
would also speak on the
importance of all of the foot
soldiers involved in ending
racism.
In his comments, Lowe
said that one of Dr. King’s
chief attributes was the abil-
ity “to inspire”.

The Callaway Cavaliers had four play-
ers to score in double digits to knocked off
Pepperell in an important region game
Friday night to remain unbeaten in Region
5—AAA by a score of 76-54.
Joe Brown scored eight points in the
first quarter for Callaway and Dre Martin
and Braylon Sanders scored 6 points each
to give the Cavaliers a strong 31-9 first quar-
ter lead and rolled to an easy victory after
that.
The Callaway defense was the key to
the team’s success. The Cavaliers made
steal after steal and used the turnovers to
make easy baskets.
Brown led the Cavaliers in scoring with
19 points, Martin scored 18, Ernest Patillo
scored 13 and Sanders finished the night
with 12 points.

Callaway’s Cedric Maynard Earns State Honors 1
By JOHN KUYKENDALL
Cedric Maynard, who had a great sen-
ior citizen with the Callaway High
Cavaliers, has received state honors.
Maynard helped lead the Callaway High
Cavalier football team to a 10-2 season, the
Region 5—AAA Championship and a victo-
ry in the state playoffs. He rushed for 2,415
yards and 26 touchdowns on 252 carries
this past season and was only 85 yards shy
of making history. ‘
If Maynard had rushed for 2,500 yards
he would been one of few running backs
in the history of Georgia High School foot—
ball to rush for 2,500 yards in a season.
However, Maynard was selected as a
second-team member of the Associated
Press All—State football team and was
named first—team All-State player on the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-State
team.
Wrestlers Flex Muscles Against Columbus
As part of the Dr. King
Day program, Hogansville
city leaders honored one of
the city’s native sons, Atlanta
Falcon football great Alfred
Jenkins, who played wide
receiver for the Falcons from-
1975 until 1983.
During his career in
Atlanta, Jenkins had 360
receptions good for 6,267
yards and 40 touchdowns.
Lowe, spoke on
the importance
of foot soldiers

ing struggle to

Callaway High
wrestlers Gabriel Liranzo,
Andrew Thomas, Nick
Trammell and Brandon
Boddie made senior day a
success last week against
Columbus High.
It was senior day at the
school and the four
wrestlers were honored
before the match began and
then, three of them stepped
onto the mat and took care
of business lifting the
Cavaliers to a 42-36 victory.
Liranzo got things
rolling for the Cavaliers
with a pin in the 160 pound
class. Then Thomas got a
pin in the 170 pound class.
Boddie, in his first season,
won by forfeit due his oppo-
nent not making weight and
then earned a 12-7 win in a
exhibition match.
Justin Kiss, a sopho—'
more who has been spec-
tactular this season, pinned
his opponent in the third
period.
Hayden Taylor earned a
win in the 126 pound class,
pinning his opponent from .
Columbus in 12 seconds. '
