Flint River Tech to
Offer Associate Degrees
The State Board of Technical
and Adult Education approved
Flint River Technical Institute's
application to offer the Associate
of Applied Technology degree at
its January 6 meeting in Atlanta.
"We're starting the new mil-
lennium with a new challenge and
new opportunity to serve the peo-
ple of this area," said Dr. Carlos
Schmitt, President of Flint River
Technical Institute. "We'll offer
Associates in four programs
beginning with the Spring
Quarter."
The four programs are
Secretarial Sciences, Early
Childhood Care and Education,
Computer Information Systems
and Electronics Technology.
"The basic differences
between the diploma program
and the associate's program are
in the general education cours-
es," said Dr. Edith Day, Flint River
Tech's Vice President for
Instructional Services. "We'll
start offering Associate-level
classes in English and psycholo-
gy beginning in the Spring
Quarter."
The general education cours-
es for all four Associate of
Applied Technology degree pro-
grams include English, humani-
ties, psychology or economics,
and college algebra or college
trigonometry. Each Associate
degree candidate must complete
30 credit hours in general educa-
tion courses in addition to the
technical-course credit hours
needed for his/her field of study.
The new Associate of Applied
Technology degree will give stu-
dents another credential when
applying for jobs. In addition, stu-
dents may move into the Bachelor
of Applied Science (BAS) pro-
gram at any of Georgia's univer-
sities that offer that degree.
Clayton College and State
University and Macon College
are two nearby universities
which offer the BAS degree.
