Dan Stout Special Correspondent The Callaway High Cavaliers were eliminated in the semi-final round of the state tournament last week by East Laurens in overtime, 78-74. The Cavaliers had both arms around a semifinal-victo- ry. Holding on to a 2 point lead with 4 seconds to go, there was an unexpected foul called on Callaway. This sent East Laurens to the bonus line for a one and one. They hit both free passes that tied the game at 68 and sent the hard fought con- test into overtime. REGGIE JACKSON answered a 3-pointer with one of his own in the overtime peri- od to keep the Cavaliers' hopes alive early in the extra minutes of play. However, it appeared as though the CAVS begin to freeze. The ice rink covered by the gym floor wasn much cold- er than the Callaway offensive attack. The East Laurens Falcons rolled up a 4 point lead in over- time and won the Class A semi- finals at the Macon Centreplex Wednesday. Callaway started: Smith, Philpot, Grissom, Grier, and Harrison. East Laurens started the scoring with a lay up and lead the first three quarters of the contest. THE WIN ALLOWED THE Falcons to advance to the State Championship game against Wilkinson County. Demetrius Smith was high scorer for Callaway with 21 points. In the last seconds of the game, Smith had single hand- edly tied the score and put Callaway out front by 2 with only 4 seconds to go. The Callaway starting ling- up played most of the gamey " East Laurens played a sim- ilar game plan to the one of CaUaway, outside shooting. THE DIFFERENCE IN the game was that the Falcons unleashed a fire storm of three pointers that kept them in check with the high powered CaUaway offense for the entire game.
