Georgia Residential Mortgage Licensee
to assess pollution sources
that may contaminate the
lakes and streams we use for
drinking water. The project,
called a Source Water
Assessment Plan (or SWAP),
which took place in Coweta,
Meriwether, and Troup
Counties, has recently been
completed. The assessment
was funded by the Georgia
Department of Natural
Resources' Environmental
Protection Division and fol-
lowed guidelines from the
Federal Safe Drinking Water
Act Amendments of 1996.
SWAPs were developed
"for the protection and ben-
efit of the public water sys-
tems and for the support of
monitoring flexibility."
WWETCO, an environmental
consulting firm, worked with
the Chattahoochee-Flint RDC
to inventory known pollution
sources and to identify addi-
tional areas that may release
pollutants. This data was used
to create maps and determine
the susceptibility of the water
system intakes to these pol-
lutants. The information
gained during the project will
be an important tool used to
monitor and ensure safe
drinking water quality.
During the project, rep-
resentatives from the three
counties served on a Task
Force to study the issue and
lend guidance to the project.
In addition, the staffs of the
Hogansville, LaGrange,
Manchester, Newnan, Senoia,
and Woodbury public water
systems provided technical
assistance.
Copies of The Coweta,
Meriwether and Troup
County Regional Source
Water Assessment Plan for
individual water systems are
available to the public at the
water utilities and local gov-
ernments of Coweta County,
Newnan, Senoia, Meriwether
County, Manchester,
Woodbury, HogansviUe,
LaGrange, and Troup County.
SWAP reports will soon be
available on the CFRDC web-
site and at public libraries in
the region.
• CFRDC staff is also avail-
able to talk to community
groups about the project
results and implications.
