Be Kind to
OneAnother
Recently,l was at a meeting when an older
woman arrived late, Since the seats were
all taken by the lime she arrived, she walked
to the back of the room and took a place
with the others who were standing, Althougt~
I knew the meeting was expected to last
about an hour, I offered her my chair anyway
and when she accepted my offer, I knew
[ was in for a long meeting, But, t also knew
that she needed the chair more than t did and that my offer was
but meaningful way to let her know that she mattered; and as it turned
out, it really made my day to 9ive her my chair, This wasonly a minor act d
kindness, but one which we have the opportunity to do almost every day.
How easy it is to hold the doo~ for someone, or to share our lunch, or let
someone in front of us in line. And, the great value of these little gestures
is that they let others know that they are being noticed and valued. Even
though most of us will never be called to martyrdom for acts of great hero-
ism or sacrifice, we can all still perform small acts of kindness each
and ev~ da~/. A friendly smile or a chee~ hello can be an act of kindness,
and one which will usually be returned in kind.
