High School/High Tech Working
High School/High Teeh is an enrichment program for
students with disabilities who have the ability to pursue
advanced education and training beyond the secondary level.
Studies indicate that 80% of the jobs in our economy require
technological training. The High.School/High Tech program
provides students exposure to promising science, engineer-
ing, and technology-related careers. High School/High Tech
is a collaboration consisting of education, rehabilitation pro-
fessionals, business representatives and others interested
in the educational welfare of young people. The goal is coop-
eration with people from various segments of the communi-
ty, exchanging information, and expanding contacts for par-
ticipants.
The local students participating in High School/High
Tech for the 2001-2002 school year are Larry Alsabrook,
Anthony Cox, Dominiquez Johnson, Eric Barber, Michael
Egli, Daniel Shelnutt, Brandon Thompson, Jeremy Wellos,
Case Darden, Eric Johnson, Wes simms, and Lashawn
Foreman. They represent Callaway, LaGrange, and "IYoup
ttigh Schools. Faculty sponsors are Vanessa Roberts,
Callaway High School; Lafon Lawrence and Linda Kelley,
LaGrange High School; and Danny Baldwin, Troup High
School.
A grant written by the Georgia Department of Labor
Division of Rehabilitation provided the funds for this yea£'s
activities. The activities included an overnight trip to the
U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and a
tour to the Anniston Museum of Natural History in Anniston,
Alabama•
High School/High Tech funds were used to purchase an
electronic planner for each participating student. Tony
Knight from Radio Shack in LaGrange provided training in
the proper use of the electron planner. An end of the school
year activity is being planned for May.
