Vacation Bible School will be
held at Antioch Baptist Church
Saturday, June 10th from 9 a.m.
until 5 p.m. for ages three and up.
Mrs. Velma H. McGill
February 3, 1931 - May 16, 2000
Macon - Mrs. Velma Hanners (Cindy) McGill, 69, of Macon, died
May 16 at her home.
The funeral service was conducted May 19 in the Chapel of the
Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The
Reverend Donald R. McGaha officiated and interment was in Myrtle
Hill Cemetery in Hogansville. Pallbearers were Robert Hendrix,
Levon Pruitt, L.T. Hogan, Chad Hendrix, Jason Ownby, and Justin
Ownby.
Mrs. McGill was born February 3, 1931 in Heard County, daugh-
ter of the late Harrison and Eva Powell Hanners. She had lived in
the Macon area since 1968 and retired from Robins Air Force Base
as an avionics technician.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Lea Ownby of Atlanta
and Sylvia Lynn McGill of Macon; two sons and a daughter-in-law,
Michael L. McGill and Jeffrey L. and Christy S. McGill, all of Macon;
one brother, Jessie O. Hanners of Hogansville; four grandchildren,
Jason Ownby and Justin Ownby, both of Atlanta, Anneliese Newberry
of Lizella, and Stephanie O'Neal of Macon; and one great-grand-
daughter, Isabel Newberry of Lizella.
The Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville
was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Janice H. Woodley
November 2, 1950 - May 22, 2000
Hogansville - Mrs. Janice Hay Woodley, 49, of Hogansville, died
May 22 at her home. The funeral service was conducted May 24 at
Antioch Baptist Church in Hogansville. The Reverend Wesley
Boatman officiated and interment was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in
Hogansville. Pallbearers were Jimmy Paschal, Bobby Mote, Joey
Chapman, Harold Swann, Clint Clem, and Vince Elder.
Mrs. Woodley was born November 2, 1950 in HogansviUe, daugh-
ter of the late Inez and Frank Hay. She lived in Hogansville most of

Baptist
Springfield Baptist Church in

Spring Annual Revival May 25-
26. Speakers will be Rev. William
Harris of New Beginning Baptist
Church, LaGrange, Thursday
night and Rev. Curtis Green,
Messiah Ministries of Griffin on
Friday night. Services begin at
7:30 p.m.
Following the revival, May 28
which is fourth Sunday, Rev.
Joseph A. McGuire's 11th
anniversary will be celebrated.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m.

one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Scotty Chapman of
Hogansville; one son, Terry Bozeman of Marietta; two sisters,
Margaret Bullock and Lynn Pike, both of Hogansville; one brother,
Harry Hay of Newnan; and two grandchildren, Lacy Chapman and
Ryan Scott Chapman of Hogansville. She was preceded in death by
a grandson, Cody Eugene Chapman.

Mrs. Gertrude C. Shifter
April 17, 1918 - May 21, 2000
Grantville - Mrs. Gertrude Costley ShifteR, 82, of Grantville, died
Sunday, May 21 at Emery Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.
The funeral service was conducted May 23 in the Chapel of the Claude
A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend
Jimmie L. Willis officiated and interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery
in Newnan. Pallbearers were David Dorrough, Lem Kee, Jerry
Davison, Everett Clark, Robert Nash, and Clyde Prescott.
Mrs. Shiflett was born April 17, 1918 in Coweta County, daugh-
ter of the late John William Henry Costley and the late Jewel Emma
Bryant Costley. She was a lifelong resident of Coweta County, was
retired from West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Company in
Grantville, and was the wife of the late Melvin Shiflett. She was a
member of the First Baptist Church of Grantville and the Grantville
Senior Center.
Survivors include one stepson, Charles Shiflett of Opelika,
Alabama; four step-grandchildren, Glenn Shiflett of Wedowee,
Alabama, Mrs. Donna Johnson of Opelika, Alabama, Mrs. Joann
Hudgins of Newnan, and Mrs. Brenda Pope of Atlanta; nine step-
great-grandchildren; six step-great great-grandchildren; and sever-
al nieces and nephews, including a niece, Mrs. Connie Dorrough, and
a great-nephew, David Dorrough, both of Jonesboro.

Summertime is right around
the corner and that also heralds
the return of Vacation Bible
School to Hogansville First
Baptist Church in June, which
begins with the V.B.S. kickoff on
Saturday, June 3rd with registra-
tion, games and refreshments at
the church during the hours of 2-
3 in the afternoon. And from 6:00-
8:30 p.m. starting on Sunday
night, June 4th through Thursday
night, June 8th, which will con-
clude with a hot dog supper and
commencement for the children
and their parents. The theme this
year is an ocean theme: "The
Fantastic Good News Ocean
Odyssey...Diving into the Depths
of God's Faithfulness."
Vacation Bible School is for
ages 3-12 and a nursery will be
provided for infants and toddlers.

The Story of Memorial Day
On the first anniversary of a great battle of the Civil War,
some ladies in Columbus, Mississippi went to the cemetery to
• put flowers on the graves of the fallen
t soldiers. In this particular cemetery, there
were many fallen Union soliders. These
ladies made no distinction between the
two. News of this act spread throughout
the country.. More and more communities
began their own tributes to fallen soldiers
until a national Memorial Day was instated
