pAGE 10-A HoG~v'vsvmt~ HOME NEWS - THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2004 Hogansville Native Plans Trip to Africa Dr. Tony B. Lowe, a Hogansville native, will be departing for Ghana on May 23, 2004. As an Assistant Professor in the ~hool of Social Work at the University ~Georgia, he is also one of five facul- members in university's West African dy Aboard Program, whereby he will leading students, teaching students, and learning from the Ghanaian peo- ple. : He will be teaching a course in"Social ~ice Delivery in Ghana", engaging [, i with Ghanaian scholars and service providers, surveying their mental health system, and provide community out- reach. To address some social needs, he has received a number of donations to deliv- er. Mike Johnson, former city major and proprietary of Mike's Elite Restaurant, provided of school supplies for one of the Ghanaian schools, where the group will be completing a service learning project. "I am grateful to represent my nation, state, the university, and the Hogansville community as I embark on my jom-ney", explained Dr. Lowe. As the world become smaller, "it is imperative that we seek out opportunities to share and learn from't'he rest of the world". He is the so~.0f Vera J. Lakes and the late Johnnie Hardy, Sr. of Hogansville and is a 1984 graduate of Hogansville High School. He currently resides in Dacula with his lovely wife Bevely. TOP CHOICE- Jared Cole was chosen to be Sheriff for the Day on Monday, May 17. Jared was chosen for his positive attitude, outstanding citizenship, and par- ticipation in the Junior Deputy program. Jared spent the day shadowing a deputy to see what responsibilties the sheriffs department has during the course of the day. The Junior Deputy program is implemented in the Troup County third grades by the Sheriff's department. Through this program, students learn about safety and respon- sibility as citizens, Here, Jared is shown with Deputy C. Phillips.
