New Charges Set
For Soil Samples
After much discussion,
a decision has been reached
pertaining to the appropri-
ate fee to charge for rou-
tine soil samples. We will
comply with the Governor's
recommendation as passed
by the General Assembly.
Effective July 1,2003, there
will be a 2-tier system
established for all routine
soil samples.
The charges for all rou-
tine soil samples will be
$2.00 for pasture and row
crops for farmers. All other
soil samples such as turf
and ornamentals, garden,
food plots,
Consultants/Fertilizer deal-
ers will be $6.00. A routine
soil sample test for ph, lime
requirement, available
phosphorous, potassium,
calcium, magnesium, zinc,
and manganese. They are
other test available such as
boron, organic matter, sol-
uble salts, nitrate, and
greenhouse/nursery test
for artificial mixes only.
These tests will cost a nom-
inal fee.
Instructions for taking a
soil sample are:
With a spade, trowel,
auger, or soil sampling
tube, take a thin vertical
slice or core of soil from at
least 10-20 different places
in the area to be tested.
Combine and mix thor-
oughly together. Soil must
be dry before, we mail sam-
ple to Athens.
For row crop sample to
plow depth; for lawns and
turf and pasture surface 4"
depth; gardens surface 6"
depth; orchards surface 8
to 12" depth and pecan
groves surface 6 to 8" depth.
One sample should rep-
resent no more than 15
acres. If more than one soil
type is present within sam-
pling area, take a separate
sample from each soil type.
In order to get the must
accurate analysis avoid
sampling high and low
spots, areas along roads,
and old fence rows. These
areas are usually consider
problem areas and should
be sampled separately.
