If the Flint River is a place you, your fam-
ily and friends go to have fun and escape
from reality, you might want to get involved
in helping to save it.
The Flint Riverkeepers Organization will
be hosting a meeting titled "The Future of
the Flint River" on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
at the Pike County Auditorium.
The Flint River is the second most endan-
gered river in the United States and many
legislative actions will affect it in the future,
the group says.
The Flint Riverkeepers organization has
been a watch doggroup which monitors leg-
islation affecting the Flint River corridor, its
waterways and tributaries.
Three dams are proposed along the Flint
by 2035, which the group says is going to have
a huge impact.
The Flint-forms the entire eastern bor-
der of Meriwether.
MERIWETHER COUNTY Tourism
Director Sabra McCullar said Monday the
Flint is a huge part of tourism not only in
Meriwether County, but for the whole state.
"We always have people wanting to know
where good fishing places are and where they
can go canoeing and kayaking," she said.
McCullar says they are looking at getting
some grants to make areas on the Flint River
where people and picnic and rent spaces for
the reunions etc.
The Flint has also been a part of a tri-state
water war between Georgia, Florida and
Alabama.
At issue is how to fairly share water from
two river basins - the Apalachicola-
Chattahoochee-Flint and Alabama - Coosa-
Tallapoosa - that begin in Georgia.
Its been called a water resource tug of
war that earned the Flint the undesirable title
of 'America's Second Most endangered River.'
The Flint was once a water-rich and full
for much of the year, a fact that attracted
developers, municipalities, power companies,
farms and nature enthusiasts to its shores -
all of which now vie for water rights.
According to concerned citizen Anna
Evans, the Flint only recovers about 60 per-
cent of its water due to the fact that Griffin
is selling the water to Newnan- which returns
it to the Chattahoochee, not the Flint.

originates as runoff from the runways of

trees?
Gordon Rogers, Executive Director of the
Flint Riverkeepers Organization will be
speaking at the meeting on Aug. 19 to let
everyone know what is threatening the Flint
and how you can become more active in pro-
tecting the river, water source and its scenic
beauty.
The Pike County Auditorium is located
on Hwy 19 South, approximately one mile
south of downtown Zebulon.
Everyone is encouraged to attend and
help save this beautiful river.

water quality, and flow of the Flint River for
the benefit of current and future generations
