'Older Workers' Conferenct,
The Georgia Older Workers Conference
and Award Luncheon was held August 29
& 30, at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain,
Georgia. A year ago the Souther Crescent
Area Agency on Aging (SCAAA) was
approached about chairing and hosting the
State Conference in the SCAAA region.
Callaway Gardens was chosen because of
its beautiful location and conference cen-
ter, which could provide a resort atmos-
phere. During the past year, the SCAAA
and contractor staff for the Senior
Employment Program have planned and
worked to make the 12th annual event the
best one yet.
Andrea Wooten, President and Chief
Executive of Green Thumb, was the
keynote speaker. Green Thumb is the
nation's oldest and largest provider of
employment and training for older and dis-
advantaged individuals. There were work-
shops both Tuesday and Wednesday with a
variety of subjects ranging from Elder
Legal Issues, Motivation in Employment,
Nutrition and Legislative updates. There
was also an interesting panel presentation
of five local employers that discussed the
value of hiring older workers. The compa-
nies represented were Wal-Mart, Publix,
Kroger, CVS Pharmacy and Goody
Products.
Tuesday night's activities included a
Luau held at the CaUaway Beach area, the
Kele's Pacific Dancers (who provided
authentic Polynesian dance), and a local
band from Carrollton, Nightflights, who
played beach music.
On Wednesday, an Awards
was provided to honor the
Older Worker winners with one
sen as the state winner. This
