finds is a lame man named
Mephibosheth. This young man
has been lame on his feet since
he was five years old. David
sends for this man, brings him
to the palace and gives him a
place at the king's table. This is
a wonderful illustration of
grace.
According to the late Dr.
Harold Sightler there are four
things in this story that relates
to us the grace of God. He says
first of all that grace is God lov-
hag unlovely sinners. The Bible
definition of grace is unmerit-
ed favor. Truly the love of God
is undeserved and unearned by
those of us who inhabit the
earth, but God "so loved the
world that he gave his only
begotten son that whosoever
believeth in him should not per-
ish." Next in this story, we find
grace is God lifting unable sin-
ners. Mephibosheth was lame
and unable to get to the king. So
the king brought Mephibosheth
to himself. What a picture of
grace, man could not get to God,
so God came to where man was
and brought unable humans to
himself. David said is Psalm 40,
"He brought me up also out of
an horrible pit..." God not only
reached down for fallen human-
ity, but he picked them up.
Thirdly we find in this story that
grace is God giving undeserv-
ing sinners. David restored to
Mephibosheth all that pertained
to his grandfather, Saul. Just as
Mephibosheth was blessed
because of his relationship to
Saul's son Jonathon, we are
blessed based on our relation-
ship to God's son, Jesus. All that
we have is because of Jesus and
his sacrifice on the cross of
Calvary. Lastly we find grace
is God keeping unworthy sin-
ners. Mephibosheth was given
a permanent seat at the king's
table. To those saved by the
grace of God, they are kept by
the grace of God.
The next time you hear the
word grace and some dear old
saint of God gets "happy," you
must remember Mephibosheth.
When you realize that grace is
God loving unlovely sinners,
lifting unable sinners, giving
